Presently, il-Ġirja t’Għawdex, by Run Gozo, has evolved into one of the main sporting events in Gozo and one of the most craved half-marathons in the Maltese Islands. It is successfully coordinated by a group of youths coming from the Xaghra Youth Centre, each having their own responsibility within the organising committee. Very recent accomplishments include the 3-Star Certification award from ‘European Athletics’ for our Half Marathon and the 5-Star Certification for our 10K. Moreover, we are also certified as a Gold Label Race from Malta Athletics.
Although these are very prestigious achievements in local and international sports, which allows us to create a new running mentality within the Maltese Islands, we have also decided to create another dimension to our work. Hence, we give back to the community.
These are our recent achievements:
We provided the option of giving a donation to one of the following charities for the 2021 Virtual Run:
Following our Fair Play initiative, in which members of the Run Gozo committee travelled to Guatemala, to help out those in need, we are extremely proud and grateful that others are following up with similar initiatives to help those in need, also through sports and physical activity! 🏃♀️🏃♂️
The Run Gozo team helped a fantastic group from San Lawrenz, Malta, who are following our path with their project Believe Love Do - Guatemala - San Lawrenz Youths! 🇬🇹
Our team assisted the San Lawrenz Run in Aid Of Guatemala by providing the necessary expertise and technical help to ensure that those who ran this charitable run also enjoyed the complete running experience.
Members from the Run Gozo organising committee participated in the Dwejra Treasure Hunt organised by the Ministry for Gozo, in which our team placed first.
The €500 reward was given to the San Lawrenz youth group, who participated in the same event and who were collecting money for their upcoming voluntary mission trip to Guatemala, a similar experience which was also done by the Run Gozo group last summer.
By combining our love for sport and everything voluntary, we have decided to help one of Fr. Anton Grech’s missions in Guatemala through the direct hands-on approach and through the collection of the much-needed funds. €37,766.20 were raised to build a roof for the GuateMalta Sports Arena.
